My Little Cheap Dictaphone sprung from the minefield of talent that is JauneOrange, a collective of Belgian musicians who work together to self-produce albums, organize music festivals and help promote touring bands. In 2002, My Little Cheap Dictaphone released their first studio album "Music Drama", produced and recorded by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive, Azure Ray). They were all over magazines, radio and television, with 2 singles garnering frequent radio airplay as well as the appearance on MCM of the popular video "Ukranian girl".

After two years of touring, including shows with Nada Surf, Bonnie Prince Billy, Chokebore and Girls in Hawaii, My Little Cheap Dictaphone's founder Redboy formed Hollywood Porn Stars with Anthony Sinatra (frequent live guest guitarist for MLCD). Hollywood Porn Stars was quickly signed to Naive Records (home of White Stripes, Muse, Carla Bruni) and spent the past year performing nearly one hundred shows all over Europe.

Redboy has spent the last three years writing his new ambitious studio album “Small Town Boy”, recorded from January to March 2006 with severals acknowledged producers such as Duke (Venus), Niek Meul (Das Pop), the countryman Phil Corthouts and Anthony Sinatra (Hollywood Porn Stars). The album is released on April 21st for Benelux on JauneOrange, Anorak Supersport and Bang ! ( and now working for labels and deals outside Benelux)

The music of My Little Cheap Dictaphone is a string driven blend of orchestrated pop and yard-sale band instruments, evoking strains of Sparklehorse,The Thrills and Mercury Rev. Frequent comparisons have been made to the likes of PJ Harvey, Bright Eyes and Arcade Fire.

Soutenu par deux singles (et un clip) amplement diffusés, ce premier album aux ambiances hantées remporte un accueil enthousiaste.
Les médias s’y intéressent, désignant d’emblée le phénomène comme une des révélations belges de l’année.

Entre temps, Redboy rencontre Anthony Sinatra, avec qui il fonde Hollywood Porn Stars (un album sort chez Naïve, et la bande foule une centaine de scènes en Europe pendant 3 ans)

My Little Cheap Dictaphone n’en est pas pour autant oublié...
Voilà trois ans que Small Town Boy, le deuxième album qui sortira le 21 avril, mûrit.
Il s’agit d’un ouvrage de longue haleine, composé de chansons soigneusement lustrées au fil du temps.
Si le tout est finalement enregistré en quelques jours de l’hiver 2006, dans des conditions live, c’est avec la même patience d’orfèvre qu’il a été peaufiné : deux mois de studio, aux côtés des producteurs, arrangeurs et mixeurs Duke (Venus), Niek Meul (Das Pop), Anthony Sinatra et Phil Corthouts.

La musique de My Little Cheap Dictaphone se veut avant tout basée sur des émotions toujours intègres, dont Small Town Boy décline toute la palette humaine.
On vogue entre de la folk-pop soigneusement orchestrée et un certain indie rock poignant, on passe du guilleret au grave, comme si Les Thrills, Sparklehorse et Mercury Rev croisaient Bright Eyes, PJ Harvey ou Arcade Fire.

Avec son intégrité ancrée dans de solides racines, Small Town Boy présente une authenticité qui ne demande qu’à se laisser apprivoiser.
Celle-ci se transporte également sur scène, où l’univers habité du trio, à la fois rêveur et enragé, prend tout son sens.

Na toevoeging van het kokende Luikse collectief JauneOrange goed schudden en .... My little Cheap Dictaphone sp(r)uit voort uit het toenmalige éénmansproject van Redboy.

Sindsdien zijn de (vr)olijke freewheel-bricolages elkaar evenwel snel opgevolgd, in stijgende lijn naar de opname van "Music Drama", zo ergens tussen België en Nebraska, met Xavier Guinotte aan de bas en Jérôme Compère aan het drumstel, dit met de eminente medeplichtigheid van Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive, Azure Ray). Met de steun van 2 ruim verspreide singles (en een clip) is het eerste album boordevol ambiance enthousiast onthaald.
De media betuigden hun interesse en bestempelden het fenomeen als één van de Belgische revelaties van het jaar. Twee tourneejaren aan de zijde van Nada Surf, Sophia, Bonnie Prince Billy, Venus of Chokebore volgden.

Intussen ontmoette Redboy Anthony Sinatra, met wie hij Hollywood Porn Stars oprichtte (een album kwam uit bij Naïve en de band speelde op drie jaar tijd een honderdtal podia in Europa plat).

My little Cheap Dictaphone was intussen nochtans niet in de vergeetput gesukkeld ..... Drie jaar lang heeft "Small Town Boy" liggen rijpen , het tweede album dat op 21 april uitkwam. Het was een werk van lange adem, een verzameling van zorgvuldig met de tijd opgeblonken songs. Het geheel is op enkele dagen tijd opgenomen tijdens de winter van 2006, in live condities. Met hetzelfde engelengeduld is het verder verfijnd: twee maanden van studio aan de zijde van de producenten, arrangeurs en mixers Duke (Venus), Niek Meul (Das Pop), Anthony Sinatra en Phil Corthouts.

De muziek van My little Cheap Dictaphone gaat er prat op bovenal gebaseerd te zijn op zuivere emoties, die Small Town Boy in al zijn facetten ondergaat.

Modieus, tussen zorgzaam georkestreerde folkpop en een zekere hardverscheurende indiërock, gaat het van uitbundig tot bittere ernst, als een kruising van Les Thrills, Sparklehorse en Mercury Rev met Bright Eyes, PJ Harvey of Arcade Fire.

Met een diepgewortelde integriteit presenteert Small Town Boy een authenticiteit die niet anders kan dan herkenning en identificatie oproepen.
Dit is ook op het podium te beleven, waar de wereld van het trio, tegelijk dromerig en boordevol energie, volledig tot zijn recht komt.
