How to Easily Check if a Vehicle Transfer has been Registered by the ANTS

After selling or giving away a vehicle, the seller remains legally responsible until the transfer is registered in the registration system. Parking fines, radar violations, or tickets continue to arrive in their name if the declaration has not been properly processed by the ANTS (National Agency for Secure Titles). Checking this registration only takes a few minutes, but one must know where to look and what to check.

File status on the France Titres portal: what each mention means

Most guides simply explain how to create an ANTS account or fill out the Cerfa form. The real issue for sellers arises afterward: interpreting the status displayed in their personal space.

By logging into the France Titres portal (formerly ANTS), the “My Procedures” section lists each request with a progress label. For a transfer declaration, three common scenarios frequently arise:

  • File “Completed”: the transfer is registered in the vehicle registration system (SIV). The seller is no longer associated with the vehicle. A PDF export of this history, available from the portal, serves as dated proof.
  • File “In processing”: the declaration has been received but not yet validated. This status can persist for several days, especially during peak times or after technical incidents on the platform.
  • File “Rejected” or accompanied by a request for additional documentation: an error in the form or a missing document blocks the procedure. The seller is then still considered the owner in the SIV.

A seller who wants to know if a transfer is registered must ensure that the status displays “Completed,” and not just that the request has been submitted. The distinction is crucial: a submitted but unvalidated file does not legally protect the seller.

Check a vehicle transfer via the Simplimmat app

Since the launch of Simplimmat at the end of 2023, the Ministry of the Interior has offered an additional control method to the web portal. The app, linked to the seller’s France Titres profile, has a “History” section that displays the vehicles associated with the account.

The principle is simple: if the transferred vehicle no longer appears in the list of vehicles associated with the profile, the transfer has indeed been recorded in the SIV. This check does not require any file number, unlike tracking on the web portal.

Simplimmat provides a practical advantage for sellers who have lost their file reference or cannot find the acknowledgment of registration received by email. The History section centralizes all procedures performed, including those initiated via the ANTS website.

Limitations of the app

The app reflects SIV data with a slight delay. A file just validated on the portal may take a few hours to appear in Simplimmat. In case of doubt, cross-referencing the two sources (web portal and app) remains the most reliable method.

Common errors that block the registration of an ANTS transfer

A transfer certificate rejected by the system almost always results from three categories of errors. Identifying them in advance prevents remaining legally attached to the vehicle for weeks.

Error in the name or first name of the buyer: the SIV compares the entered information with identity databases. A typo, a missing accent, or a poorly entered compound first name is enough to cause a rejection. The Cerfa 15776*02 form, filled out with the buyer at the time of sale, must exactly match the information on the identity document.

Transfer code not provided to the buyer: at the end of the online procedure “Sell or give my vehicle,” a transfer code is generated. This code is essential for the buyer to initiate their own registration request. Without this transmission, the buyer cannot register the vehicle in their name, and the seller remains the previous owner in the system.

Non-crossed-out registration certificate or incomplete mention: the registration certificate handed to the buyer must include the mention “Sold on” or “Transferred on” followed by the date, time, and seller’s signature. The absence of this mention does not directly block online registration but may cause issues in case of future disputes.

Legal deadlines and unavailability of the ANTS portal: what to do in case of a breakdown

The seller has a period of 15 days after the sale to declare the transfer on the ANTS portal. The buyer has one month to submit the registration request in their name.

These deadlines remain applicable even in the event of platform unavailability. During episodes of cyberattacks or prolonged maintenance reported in early 2025, the Ministry of the Interior reminded that proof of an attempt to proceed online can be used to justify good faith. Screenshots of the error page, acknowledgments of receipt of the ANTS contact form, or automatic emails from the platform are acceptable elements in case of dispute.

The Histovec reflex to complete the verification

The Histovec site, managed by the Ministry of the Interior, allows generating a report on the administrative situation of a vehicle. By entering the registration number and the information from the registration certificate, the seller can check if the administrative situation certificate still mentions their name as the owner.

This report does not replace the file tracking on the France Titres portal, but it offers independent confirmation. If Histovec still displays the seller’s name several weeks after the declaration, it is a sign that the transfer registration has not been completed.

The PDF document exportable from the France Titres portal, when the file is marked “Completed,” is accepted by several insurers to confirm the end of coverage on the transferred vehicle. Keeping this dated proof avoids back-and-forth with the insurance, even if the buyer delays in registering the vehicle in their name. A “Completed” file on France Titres remains the only opposable proof that the transfer has indeed been processed in the national system.
